Pityriasis capitis

Dandruff (Pityriasis capitis) is a common condition, which affects around 50 percent of the world’s total adult population (Elewski, 2005). It makes the skin on the scalp to flake. Fortunately, it is not serious or contagious and is easy to treat without a doctor and with a good shampoo. Therefore, it is important to treat your hair well and use the right shampoo with good and effective ingredients, otherwise symptoms as itchy scalp, scaly and crusty scalp and skin flakes can return or extend on your scalp and hair.

What causes pityriasis capitis/dandruff

While the occurrence of your dandruff is unclear. A couple factors are highly likely to cause it:

  • The amount of sebum
  • The presence of yeast on the skin (Malassezia species)
  • A certain predisposition
  • Irritated oily skin
  • Dry skin
  • Other skin conditions as psoriasis and eczema
  • Contact dermatitis

These factors have a direct influence on the occurrence of dandruff in your hair and on your scalp. Using the right products for your hair condition is especially important to prevent it.

Do I have pityriasis capitis/dandruff?

It is important to understand that dandruff does not develop because of hygienic factors, it is not about how clean you are. But other factors such as: stress, feeling tired, HIV, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy or the above mentioned, can cause it. Also the weather seems to have impact, in the winter the weather is cold and dry, which make it easier for it to arise. Also in teenage years and after the age of 50 it is more likely to get it.

You can recognize the skin condition to the flakes, itch on the scalp and yellow greasy and dry scales on the scalp. In severe cases the scales are yellowish to reddish (Pevzner & Radusky, 2020).

Duration of dandruff

When Seborrheic dermatitis causes dandruff than is a long-term treatment the best treatment. This treatment includes using the right shampoo.

Contact dermatitis, dry skin, changing habits or shampooing habits also cause the skin to flake. In this cases the flakes can clear up fairly quickly. An important thing to understand is that the condition does not specifically disappear for the long term future. There is always a chance it could come back. For this reason you can use Neofollics to prevent a sebum build up to reduce the risk of dandruff.
