Red clover extract

Red clover originally is from the legume family. The red clover grows wild throughout Europe and in Northern and Central Asia; southwards from the Mediterranean to the Arctic circle. The plant flowers from May to autumn with pink to red flowers. The inflorescences are spherical to ovoid and have supporting leaves at the base of the upper leaves. The plant was formerly used as a fodder crop in agriculture and is brought to Australia and New Zealand by settlers.

Health benefits

Red clover (Trifolium pratense) is a wild flowering plant and grows 15-40 cm high. It belongs to the same family as peas and beans. It can be eaten as a legume and is used in health supplements. It is widely known as an traditional medicine as remedy for menopause symptoms; asthma, arthritis, whooping cough and cancer (Davidson, 2020). But most importantly it helps with healthy scalp and hair.

Studies on whether red clover may help reduce menopausal symptoms are mixed. One study in menopausal women suggests that red clover extract can improve elasticity of mayor arteries. The loss of elasticity can lead to an increased blood pressure, which causes your heart to work harder. However, it is not entirely known if red clover can protect against the development of heart disease, this will require more clinical trials (Memorial Sloan Cancer Centre, 2020).

Positive effects

Medical studies show that using 80 mg of red clover extract in products may have several positive effects. According to a study in 109 postmenopausal women, participants reported significant improvements in hair and skin texture, appearance and overall quality (Lipovac et al., 2011). Another study among men found that hair growth increased by 13 percent in the anagen, or growth phase, and decreased by 29 percent in the telogen phase. These studies show different results depending on the hair growth phase.

More research is needed to fully understand the effect of red clover on hair and skin. These results are significant and indicate that it is effective against hair loss, as more new hairs grow on the scalp while old hairs stay in the growth phase and fewer are lost.
