Hair loss Corona

Dermatologist Rick Waalboer-Spuij from Erasmus MC in Rotterdam told RTL that people always lose hair. This normally happens in phases so you don't lose all your hair at once. When there is a lot of stress or a serious illness, the process can be disturbed and more hair loss can occur. This is also the case for people who have been in contact with the Coronavirus. International studies show that about 1 out of 4 corona patients suffers from hair loss.

A possible cause of hair loss due to corona is the fever, which is part of the clinical picture of corona. Another possible explanation is that Covid-19 reduces the amount of oxygen-rich blood reaching the hair follicles. As these are dependent on oxygen-rich blood for growth and maintenance of the condition of the hair, this is quite possible.

Hair loss after corona usually starts 2 months after the beginning of the corona complaints. Hair loss can also occur with milder complaints. A high degree of stress can already lead to hair loss. This can also happen without corona, for example in people who experience stress through self-isolation, quarantine or the fear of becoming seriously ill as a result of a corona infection. Hair loss as a result of corona is also called Telogen Effluvium.

Different stages of hair growth

Hairs grow in so-called hair follicles. At birth, the scalp contains about 100,000 hair follicles. Over the course of life, this number gradually decreases. Each hair follicle can produce hair over and over again in a cyclical process (the hair cycle). Each hair cycle has 3 phases: anagen, catagen and telogen. Telogen effluvium or telogen hair loss is an excessive loss of hair due to a disruption of the hair growth cycle. The normal hair cycle consists of 3 phases:

Anagenic phase: Your hair actively grows during this time, which can usually last for years.
Catagenic phase: This is when the hair stops growing and separates from the follicle (the one holding the hair in place). The phase lasts for about 10 days.
Telogenic phase: The follicles take a break for two to three months, and then the hair falls out. The anagen phase begins again when the hair grows back into the same hair follicle.
The hair cycle is disturbed and too many hairs enter the telogen phase. When there are too many hairs in the telogen phase, too much hair loss occurs. This makes the hair loss visible and many people experience this as very annoying.
