Caffeine

You may know caffeine from tea and coffee, but did you know it is also a popular ingredient in hair care products designed to support healthier hair growth? Caffeine has been widely studied for its potential positive effects on hair growth and scalp health.

How does caffeine work on hair growth?

Scientists have investigated how caffeine affects hair follicles in a laboratory setting. This is known as in vitro research, meaning that the hair follicles are studied outside the human body.

Studies (Fischer et al., 2014) show that caffeine can stimulate hair growth. Researchers measured hair shaft elongation after exposure to caffeine for 120 to 192 hours. Low concentrations of caffeine (0.001% and 0.005%) resulted in faster growth compared to untreated samples. Caffeine was also tested in combination with testosterone to better understand its effects on hair growth.

Does caffeine help prevent hair loss?

Testosterone can indirectly slow down hair growth. In the scalp, it is converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can shrink hair follicles and shorten the hair growth cycle. In the same laboratory study, scientists observed that caffeine could reduce this negative effect. As a result, hair follicles were able to continue growing more effectively (Fischer et al., 2014).

A second study reported similar findings. It demonstrated that caffeine may:

• Stimulate hair growth;
• Prolong the hair growth phase;
• Increase the activity of hair cells.

Changes were also observed in substances that play a key role in hair growth. Levels of IGF-1, a growth-promoting factor, increased, while levels of TGF-β2, a factor known to inhibit hair growth, decreased.

These results were obtained in a laboratory environment, where hair follicles were examined outside the human body.

What results can caffeine help achieve?

Results may vary per person.

Emma

After 4 months of using the Neofollics Thinning hair treatment, significant progress in hair growth is visible. The treatment consisted of the Hair Growth Stimulating Shampoo and Hair Growth Supporting Tablets. These positive results have led to continuing the treatment to support further progress.

Key learnings

Laboratory research suggests that caffeine can support hair growth. Hair follicles demonstrated improved growth, while the inhibitory effects of DHT were reduced.

In addition, caffeine may influence key processes within the hair root. It stimulates the activity of hair cells and affects growth factors that support healthy hair development.

20%
Hair shaft length increased by up to approximately 20% after 120 hours of caffeine exposure.
30%
Caffeine reduced the inhibitory effect of testosterone on hair growth by up to approximately 30% at low concentrations (0.001%–0.005%).
